Kuboraum

Kuboraum are masks designed on the face of those who wear them, masks that highlight personality and emphasize character. The mask is synonymous with mockery, with game. The Kuboraum masks are synonymous with accentuation, protection and shelter. Kuboraum are like cubic rooms where we shelter ourselves, where we are free to live in our intimacy, where we live all our identities and look at the world through two lenses.

EYES ARE POWER. POINTS OF VIEW ARE PEOPLE.

The concept of identity is the field of experimentation, where the whole project emphasizes on the anxiety that each one of us has related to the contrast between presentation and self-representation. Kuboraum uses the game of mask as a hypothetical solution to this anxiety.

Choosing eyewear which is also a mask while looking in the mirror and perceiving one differently. In a society that aims to the annulment of diversity and culture with social massification, having to look different is something one has to learn.

Kuboraum is a curatorial project that interacts with important artists of the contemporary art world and music to produce an ecstatic panorama. Supporting independent music and contemporary artists, Kuboraum creates a platform for emerging artists through their ongoing art-residency in their Berlin studio and collaborates with various music artists to produce a sound which represents the brand’s identity.

SHAPEDNOISE ‘AESTHESIS’ ALBUM LAUNCH

Kuboraum continues its Open Studio event series, this time presenting the new album of Sicilian sound designer and producer Nino Pedone aka Shapednoise. To celebrate his forthcoming new album Aesthesis’ being released on numbers, Shapednoise brought together his friends for a special dj performance in the intimate and distinctive atmosphere of the Kuboraum studio. During several years this space became an important destination for sharing culture in Berlin.

KUBORAUM’S 10TH ANNIVERSARY VENEZIA

22ND.23RD APRIL 2022

In occasion of the 10th Anniversary, Kuboraum held a year long series of events, “10 Years Of Travelling”, showcasing the brand’s long standing narrative of eyewear, art and music. 10 Years Of Travelling stems from Kuboraum’s manifesto ‘we travel to know our own geography’ and celebrates the journey that started in Berlin back in 2012. An ongoing, transcendent journey beyond the borders of the body in reaction to the stagnant, immobile cultures pre determined by imposed existential realities. A journey to know and build one’s own geography, originating from the need for sharing and the innate desire to build a community. Only a curatorial research not imited to presenting contents but serving the higher purpose of triggering a movement will be able to stimulate such journey in each of us. Ultimately, the festival shall serve as a map to one’s own journey to explore one’s self.

The opening event of ‚10 Years Of Travelling’ co curated with Terraforma took place at Combo in Venice during the opening of the 59th Venice Biennale on the weekend of April 22nd and 23rd. During this two-day event, Kuboraum showcased artisanal one-of-a-kind pieces and eye couture masks, narrating the brand’s genesis with a focus on precious Italian handcraft and its diverse language. The event featured multidisciplinary acts, including live performances by Expat, Still+Ecko Bazz, a debut performance by singer Lafawndah with Forrester, followed by a live act by the group Saló. The event concluded with polyrhythmic closing sets by Cosimo Damiano and Bambounou.

KUBORAUM’S 10TH ANNIVERSARY MILANO

28TH APRIL 2022

“10 Years Of Travelling” Milan was celebrated on April 28th at Casa Flash Art along with the inauguration of Kuboraum’s new Flagship Store in the center of Milan. Since 1967, Flash Art has been a leading voice in the art world, creating culture in contemporary art, the pursuit of radicalism and the space of avant-garde. On April 28th, Casa Flash Art became home to the premiere of the new performance Sirenomelia by polyhedric artist Agnes Questionmark (Agnes?). In constant research transcending the borders of the human body, Agnes? explores the depths of the abyss and fathoms the limitlessness of identity. As a human-aquatic hybrid creature, Agnes? serves as a metaphor for body and identity as liquid entities that constantly take new forms and shapes. An artistic project in constant evolution, springing from the artist’s ongoing and never-ending exploration of the self. The evening was accompanied by a dj set by Pan label head Bill Kouligas alongside the exhibition of Kuboraum’s artisanal one-of-a-kind eye couture masks, narrating the genesis behind the brand with its focus on precious Italian handcraft and its language of multitudes.

Saló [RAUM001]

The first release on Kuboraum Editions featured the avant-theatre-impro-folk-prog band SALÓ’s debut, a Double LP Vinyl¡limited to 500 hand-numbered and hand-painted copies, crafted by multidisciplinary artist Emiliano Maggi.

SALÓ is a mystifying fusion of noise, prog rock and psychedelic music that attempts to imagine a “dreamy and decadent” Roman renaissance. It’s the brainchild of multidisciplinary artist Emiliano Maggi, who links with Mai Mai’s Toni Cutrone, Wildmen’s Giacomo Mancini, producer Cosimo Damiano and musician, writer and critic Stefano Di Trapani to distill a wellspring of poems, fairytales, anecdotes and mythologies – drawing on mythological symbolism, medieval theater and rural iconography – into an oozing celebration of art, ecstasy and extravagance.

SALÓ developed as a way to challenge both themselves and their audience, performing with the ensemble exhaustively before they were ready to pen their debut full-length. The project is seen as a way to extend an artistic conversation across disciplines, unifying all their different interests; at any given performance, it’s hard to know what to expect, and that’s the point. One day SALÓ might be a full band, the next it could be a painting, a string ensemble or a choir. This irreverence and mischievousness undergirds the album, offering its sprawling, ambitious compositions a level of carnivalesque eccentricity that’s impossible to ignore.

Kuboraum, the Berlin-based brand that redefines eyewear as a mask of identity, has an official presence in only four galleries worldwide. One of them is located in Mexico City: Colima 112.

This space not only showcases some of the brand’s most iconic pieces, it also serves as a living extension of the Kuboraum universe. If you want to discover the brand, try on its masks, or immerse yourself in its artistic vision, Colima 112 is the place to be.
